It has been a traumatic couple of weeks for Tayden and l apologise once again for not actually updating before this but things have been so hectic that we in fact haven’t been touching sides or even finding time to update.
We made the decision to put the peg back in at the beginning of June and since its insertion into the “old” hole that didn’t close properly, we had problem after problem. It felt as times as if we were living in our paediatrician’s rooms or in the ER and we spent more than R3000 in less than 2 weeks trying to “fix” the problem and nothing helped.
As a result, we went to Cape Town on 13th July to reoperate and close the old peg hole and insert a new peg. A word of thanks here to Wings and Wishes (www.wingsandwishes.org) who came to our assistance and covered my and Tayden’s flights to Cape Town.
The time in Cape Town was extremely traumatic for both Tayden and Rob and me. He was still wide awake when we were taken to theatre, knew exactly where he was going and went hysterical – even after being given meds to calm down. I took him in theatre as I usually do and felt like a complete monster even though it was for his own good...
His ‘coming around’ after theatre was even worse than normal and he threw himself around, with both Rob and me in tears at times, feeling so helpless and watching him in so much pain. He really had a hard time with pain this time around, but if you think about the fact that he had two operations in one, then l am not surprised.
His dr was however, happy with the op and discharged us, even with a bit of temp and ear infection thrown in for good measure. I wasn’t quite sure whether to laugh or kill when the nurse at the hosp told me that Tay had a 38.8’C temp as he was lieing under a blanket – when anyone who knows Tay knows full well that he will not have a blanket near him!
Anyway, call it mom’s intuition but the next morning l told Rob l want us to get home NOW and not spend weekend in CPT as we had planned. We went and found the first flight back to PE we could and caught it. Saturday went fine but one look at his face on Sunday and I knew we were headed for trouble….added to that the fact that if we put milk in the new hole it would run straight out of the old (supposedly closed!) hole, we knew we had big issues.
We ended up being admitted at St G with an infected peg and an ER doctor who couldn’t believe her eyes at the wound. Tayden looked like a whale sprouting water when we uncovered his “closed” peg hole, and added to that the septic nature of the wound and we had a bit of a disaster on our hands! Our paed walked in on the Monday AM and things started happening with a vengeance – we were moved from one hospital to another, Tayden underwent an emergency laparotomy and Rob and l looked at each other in disbelief at yet another op for our little man.
But God was there the whole time, sending us the most gifted and soft spoken surgeon imaginable and wonder of wonders, Tayden took to him from the start! Added to that an anesthetist sent straight from heaven and that was the team that operated on our little man! Nobody could believe the amazing progress he made in the hospital and after 8 days he had his stitches removed.
We have been told that there is a small hernia but what is to be done will only be confirmed in about a week’s time. We are however, not at all concerned about it, Tayden needs his long g-tube feeding tube changed to the smaller, neater and less cumbersome mickey so we will do that at the same time as the hernia, should the hernia repair be needed.
Tayden is doing amazingly well, eating and drinking up a storm at the moment. The words, “eat mom!” are music to my ears and granny says that he doesn’t stop eating the whole day! How great is that? Although he hasn’t put on the weight he has lost during the past 2 weeks and its complications, he is eager to drink and eat, with him sometimes reaching more than 400ml drinking in less than 24 hours which is amazing for us!
We give all praise to God for keeping Tayden in the palm of His hand throughout and thank each and everyone for their prayers and support. Below are some pics taken in Cape Town during his op there as well as some taken of him a couple of nights ago, feeling much better!
