Tayden, our little miracle man
Ready for Graz! Please help me to eat!
Hi there! My name is Tayden Peter Hershensohnn (but you can call me Tay!) and I am 23 months old! As you can see I am a happy go lucky little guy who loves nothing more than to play in the sand, be at the beach or watch my Barney DVDs. I look so PERFECTLY healthy that you would never even think there was something wrong with me, would you? But guess what, I have a secret to share with you...the only reason I look so good and healthy is due to my mom, dad and granny taking such good care of me and feeding me every couple of hours. I am what is called a "peg fed" baby meaning I have a gastrostomy tube in, a little button in my tummy where I receive all my milk and food, I don't drink orally and eat almost nothing orally either. This is called Feeding Tube Dependency. I need to learn to eat and drink again.
My parents are really worried because I need to grow and develop properly and I am starting to fall behind now that I am entering my toddler years. I need to get lots of nutrients and I am just not keeping pace with feeding through the gastrostomy anymore. We tried to get my onto a special formula for peg fed babies but the medical aid wouldnt pay for it. It is not normal for me not to want to eat, my mom and dad have taken me to every doctor and specialist in South Africa they can think of but nobody can help me here.
My mom has found a programme at the University Children's Hospital in Graz, Austria where they have a 95% success rate of getting children just like me to eat and drink and that is where we are hoping to go in October 2010.
We can then take my peg out and I won't be in hospital as much anymore as I won't get all kinds of infections in my feeding peg! I was hospitalised 26 times last year, had three operations and even spent Christmas in hospital. I am pretty tired of that place even though the nurses are really nice to me.
It is my birthday in September, I will be 2 years old and the doctors in Graz reckon this is a perfect age to tube wean me. Can you help me get to Graz and eat and drink again?
We need to raise R180 000 to get to Graz and enter the program, can you help me please? Please look through my website and if you have any questions or can help me in any way, please contact my mommy Brene.
