This week has been a very good one for Tayden. He is eating and drinking up a storm and we can’t help but smile everytime we see our little guy putting food into his mouth… J
He is still sticking firmly to a couple of favourites he has developed including granny’s crumpets and pumpkin fritters, dry bread (I kid you not! He will not eat it if it has butter on it!), tuc biscuits, pringles and mini eat-sum-mores. Pediasure is still a firm favourite in terms of his drinking as well as apple juice. A new dimension this week is roooibos tea with his milk added. We are lucky that he is keen on some fruit and vegetables including apples (but only the golden delicious ones!), pumpkin (not in fritter format!), butternut, sweet potato, carrots and mashed potato. Granny is apparently going to try some pears today…we will keep you in the loop of how he is doing!
My favourite memory of Tayden his week has to do with his eating. I got up one morning this week to make Rob and me coffee and to give Tayden his first bottle of the day. I made the bottle while waiting for the kettle to boil and went through to give it to him. I was met with a big smile as he sat next to daddy in the bed and I left to make the coffee...Standing in the kitchen I heard hurried little foot steps making a dash into the lounge…and then silence. And more silence. And as every mom knows, when you hear silence, they are up to something!! I finished up with the coffee, and popped my head around the lounge door to see what he was doing. There he was, before 6am in the morning, STUFFING PRINGLES INTO HIS LITTLE MOUTH! As many and as quickly as possible they were going in…and this increased in speed when he saw me! And the guilty look on his face – absolutely priceless! Haha! I told him very nicely it was fine, he must bring the chippies and we could all sit together and he could eat them there. So there we were, three in the bed, at the crack of dawn, drinking coffee and watching our gorgeous little boy chomping down on Pringles and every now and again swigging them down with Pediasure! How wonderful is that!
Another memory of the week is the totally crestfallen look on Tayden’s face when he popped the last fistful (yes fistful, we still have to work on table manners!) of mashed potato into his mouth. A very forlorn face looked at me and said, “gone…!” Luckily mommy had some more to put into his plate for seconds and he was all smiles again!
Tayden had his first OT session this week and is definitely more active and willing to try things. He is getting up the stairs on all fours like a little monkey but going down and holding our hands he shows no fear and thunders down those stairs!
The only bad thing about this week has been his nightmares. They are still continuing and were definitely worse after the OT session and being placed into a pool of balls. After literally an hours sleep one night I emailed the powers that be in Graz and got some advice, nothing that I am not doing now but basically I just need to continue loving him, holding him a lot, having him sleep in our bed if he is insecure and keeping the routine firmly in place! And we are doing it, there is not much of a difference although he did manage to sleep the entire night in his cot with only three nightmare episodes last night. 5 wk of nightmares do get a bit much...poor little guy!
We look forward to the weekend – daddy is going to get his sand for his sandpit (more tactile working for him!) so he will probably spend more of his time there quite happily!
I will try and take some more pictures this weekend, so that we can keep track of this miracle and enjoy it!
And Gemma...we are thinking of you! Enjoy the B&B and your week there - Tayden settled into his eating there, outside of the hospital environment so we are hoping for the same success for you!
